Although it wasn't the easiest to follow and was a little awkwardly paced Kyoryuger had a great opening episode and I'm hoping that will continue. I'm sorry this is a bit late.
How many episodes do I need to have watched to claim I love a show? Because with the second episode, my excitement for this series has only grown. I know people don't like to compare them but I'm going to do it anyway, Kyoryuger has done more in two episodes than Megaforce has done in four without ever feeling rushed or over stuffed, it's masterfully written and directed so every second is used to its fullest.
What do I mean? Well firstly, we learn loads this episode. We learn how the Deboss Army creates their monsters, we learn how they are grown big too. As you guys know I'm more of a Power Rangers fan, than a Super Sentai fan, but I thought the whole emotion bingo thing was surprisingly unique. Although we saw the sorrow meter rise but then the show never told us what the sorrow meter was rising towards.
We also learn a lot more about our characters. Ami's parents for example are currently in the US and her butler called...Gentle...is raising her, so she has to pretend to be prim and proper, while actually being the opposite. Nobuharu's motivation revolves around his sister and niece, who he wants to keep safe both with his power and from it. Sure none of this is particularly new but I feel like I know these characters better than I do any of the characters in Megaforce and that has had twice as many episodes.
Despite conveying a large amount of information, the episode doesn't skimp on the action one bit and thank God for that, Kyoryuger gives us some more incredible action that is bigger and flashier than anything before it. There is just so much energy, so much enthusiasm, it's like everyone in front of the camera and everyone behind it just loves being there.
I've often felt frustrated by shows like this, which normally hold out on new weapons or the actual important villains getting involved in the action. But in one fight sequence three of the Kyoryu get new weapons and the Commander of Sorrow gets mixed up in the action and this is the first action sequence of the episode.
And I just love the juxtaposition of it all, each Kyoryu is running around using their own unique special attacks while in the background a zord is taking on giant monsters, it's just a feast of colour and explosions, there is just so much going on on screen, but it doesn't feel clustered, it feels like a real battle...or at least a real battle in your favourite videogame.
I'll be honest with you, I was never much of a fan of the zord part of Power Rangers/Super Sentai. I know, I know...it's an integral part of the show, how can you like Power Rangers/Super Sentai and not the zords? Well hear me out.
I'm secure enough in myself to simply enjoy Power Rangers/Super Sentai, not just 'ironically' and although yes Power Rangers/Super Sentai is really goofy and the weapons are normally obviously cardboard or plastic it never really got in the way. However Power Rangers/Super Sentai budget limitations seemed to completely tear apart when it came to the zord battles. I dunno, it's hard to explain. Like sure you can laugh at the guy dressed as a giant robot, with a suit so flimsy it looks close to falling apart, surrounded by obviously cardboard buildings but that isn't how I was enjoying the rest of the episode, I was enjoying the rest of the episode seriously but look at this zord battle...it's just terrible. And God, it got even worse when they started to throw cheap CGI in the mix.
Thankfully the newest Power Rangers adaptation, Megaforce, is using footage from Goseiger which is probably the first iteration where the zords don't just look downright shit. Goseiger is already three years old and the zords have come a long way in that time to the point where the zord battles look good enough to actually be taken seriously as awesome and that is never more apparent than in Kyoryuger which may be the first time I have genuinely enjoyed the zord half of the show.
What isn't in their favour is the transformation sequences, I'm pretty much convinced by now that the way the Kyoryu morph is one of the worst morphing sequences in history but that doesn't compare to the utter clunkiness of the Megazord formation, it was so bad, it was actually painful to watch.
Another problem is how boring the monsters of the week are, last week despite his hype Iceage turned out to be utterly useless and this weeks Debo Fladden was so utterly bland I can barely even remember who he is and I've just finished watching the episode. I know these creatures are just designed to be something goofy to get blown up twice in the episode but there have been some monsters with surprising amounts of personality while still fitting that function in the past, so there is no excuse for such uninteresting villains.
Bland villains and awkward transformation sequences don't hold this show back for a second, it may be cheesy and clichéd for sure but Kyoryuger has a big, genuine feeling heart and when you mix that with some eye-wateringly fantastic action sequences, you have all the right elements for the perfect Super Sentai, if this episode is any mark for the future, I am going to love this show.

Pros;
- This show knows how to feed the audience information, without fucking everything up around it.
- Characters kept simple, are the ones most easily relatable too.
- More incredible action.
- It just feels like everyone is so happy to be here.
- Zord battles I can feel proud of.
Cons;
- I'm not a fan of the Kyoryu transformations or the Zord transformation.
- Bland villains.
Think About It!
