Teen Wolf: S02E07 - 'Restraint'

Moving right on with it, here is episode seven, Restraint. Enjoy!

Opening with bad cinematography and two brand new characters probably isn't the best way to start your episode - who will both be dead by the end of it. SPOILERS. Although I guess they find a way to tie them into the story...sort of? Why is this scene here?! Why do you waste so much time Teen Wolf?

Basically Erica's Dad worked at some insurance place, that is how she knows Jackson's parents died in a car accident/possible murder and that when he is eighteen he has a lot of money coming his way. Jackson was born via c-section, pulled from his mothers dead corpse after the accident/possible murder which possibly explains why he doesn't kill the pregnant woman, or something.
Now to waste about half of our episode on a huge string of pointless scenes, all acted as over the top as physically possible, yay! I could understand if this was a drama and all about the characters, but Teen Wolf has an actual plot and as we are now past the half way point in the season, you think they'd be using their time more carefully.

This episode also does this weird thing, where it places scenes out of order, almost like they are taking place outside of the episode entirely, I've seen some weird shit in my time so this didn't really bother me, but I can imagine a few what the fucks from the casual viewer.

Oh and about the whole 'I'll reveal my secret' and Jackson's Dad being a lawyer and stuff in the last episode? It comes to nothing! Basically Jackson going to the police in the last episode creates a problem for the episode itself but in a larger scale goes truly nowhere. Awesome. And Scott doesn't show anyone his werewolf form, either.

We get to see some aftermath from Derek and crew to his after the Kanima's battle last episode with the built up implication that Gerard is the Kanima's master, which would be pretty cool but it is possible it could be the chemistry teacher too - they've found a good balance this time, considering the 'who is the Kanima?' storyline from earlier was pretty messily handled. Also plot convenience leaves Derek alone to face the Argent's. We also get some great Erica scenes this episode, if you are a fan of her. And Scott has finally joined Derek's pack in order to take down the Kanima.

We also learn that a Kanima is sort of like a pokemon, at first the Kanima can only be commanded to go after murderers, 'a weapon of vengeance' however over time as their bond goes stronger the master can use the Kanima against anything. It also can't become a werewolf until it resolves some past issues or something, I don't know.

Thankfully our showdown between Scott and Jackson is much more satisfying than the Kanima Derek fight last episode. Weird though that when these two fight in human forms, they have a more spectacular fight than when a Kanima and an Alpha face off.

Oh yeah and last episode the guy who kept turning up who I don't even remember coming into the show said he lived at the house behind Lydia's only the only house she finds is abandoned and not immediately behind hers - it is the Hale house! DUN DUN DUUUN!!! Who didn't see this coming? And how didn't she know that house was back there and the only house back there? And the twist is this was all in her head, oh well. She is apparently bringing Peter Hale back to life or something? I dunno, this episode is confusing.

Overall the episode was pretty bad, we still don't have much immediate development, because what we do have is clearly going to be explained in later episodes or perhaps not at all for how confusing it all is. The action sequences themselves are really, really good and I'm always happy for more Erica but that doesn't make up for the sheer volume of filler in this episode. This is a 12 episode per season show, the episodes should be tighter than this.

Pros;

  • The whole 'who is the Master' storyline is being treated a lot better than the 'who is the Kanima' one.
  • Erica!
  • Great action scenes.

Cons;

  • This episode is just confusing, as to why things are where they are and why they are happening.
  • The sheer volume of time this episode wastes.
  • The fact the whole Jackson develops as a character, Scott and Stiles are screwed and Scott is going to reveal himself comes to nothing, this shit would have been/was epic, dammit!
  • Why is the Kanima basically a Pokemon?
  • Bad acting

Think About It!
