Beauty and The Beast: S01E15 - Any Means Possible

Oh this is back off hiatus already? Oh... well sorry this is late then!
Look, I'll be honest, I don't really like this show. I mean I did, at the beginning for all of its problems, it was also just a lot of fun, not world changing but entertaining. Then the show started to iron out a lot of the problems the audience had been complaining about and although this at first seemed like a great thing, it only made the show hell of a lot worse and now I'm just kind of sat here almost in bemusement as to how the hell they managed to even stretch this this far, let alone for future seasons if it gets a pick up. And although episode fourteen ended on a high note, it wasn't enough to have me watching the clock for the day this show comes back again, hence this review being as late as it is. This episode was a strong one but the show started strong after the last hiatus and then took a nosedive in terms of quality a few episodes later, so I don't want to get excited quite yet.

The opening dream sequence is pretty incredible, it starts as a very tame wet dream and quickly descends into a nightmare. It largely works so well because it looks really great. As my favourite monster is a werewolf, I really love transformation sequences. And although this was no big budget full on body horror transformation, it was subtly stylish enough to still be really enjoyable. The glowing eyes, the veins pulsing in his neck, the claws and the way Monster Vincent tossed Cat across the room made her seem weightless, so it really showed the audience his incredible strength. Even the make up and CGI used to do his face looked great.

The dialogue this week was spotty at best. JT doesn't do much this episode but he manages to be charming while he is there because he gets some excellent dialogue to play with. Cat's cutesy honeymoon period glow practically blazes as she too gets some utterly hilarious dialogue to chew on but then as the episode progresses the scenes between her and Vincent get cornier and cornier to full on cringe levels by the end.

What is pretty incredible is the episode actually adds threat! Vincent got away with running around and dropping bodies in the past but now Joe's brother has been killed, the police have really stepped up and although Cat and Vincent try and make it right, they fail. Exciting stuff! Is it possible that future episodes of Beauty and The Beast will finally have both tension and direction?

It isn't all good though, for us romance fans out there, despite the declaration of love last episode the show still finds ways to back-pedal again. I like the chemistry between Cat and Vincent a lot and the scenes where they enjoy each other make me smile, sadly however the show seems to prefer them miserable in scenes that always leave my eyes rolling.

Also, what is with this new 'Vigilante' angle I know I'm one of the three people in the world with this opinion but Arrow was awful and I gave up on that show months ago, please God don't let this episode be a wink wink that the future of Beauty and The Beast is a dark superhero show about a dude in a tuxedo and masquerade mask saving the day because that would suck.

Hey look it's Edi Gathegi, meta reference? So yeah Muirfield were in this episode, did they do anything? Nope! I like how the police are now a bigger threat than the main villains. Do these even count as the main villains? Did they ever? Fuck they are so rubbish. I think we were supposed to be fearful when Evan stood up to them but even with a gun to his head, I wasn't scared of Muirfield, they are useless.

What is certainly an interesting dynamic and I'm unsure if they show is clever enough to be doing this on purpose is that there are no good guys or really any bad guys either any more. Just lots of different factions, all with very personal but strikingly different motivations. It makes the characters and their relationships feel deep and complex.

New character Gabe Lowen despite only having one episode to play with is perhaps the most interesting character in the show yet. Every scene is mysterious but cleverly constructed enough to make you eager for answers, even someone you barely know. Is a DA really stupid enough to mix locker rooms? Did his Mother really die or was that a ploy to make Cat more vulnerable? Was his hand really shaking or was it an act? And if it was shaking, why? Even if it wasn't, what was the point? Did he kill Ray? What are his connections to Cat and why the incredible interest? All this from one episode! He looks damn nice without a shirt on as well.

Cat is committing crimes but the crimes are in many senses minor and she is doing them for some sense of wider personal justice, so it isn't easy to condemn her actions despite their clear damaging knock on effect. And let's be honest, Cat threatening perps with Monster Vincent like a vicious dog is pretty damn badass.

Evan's noble motivations may be slightly lost in his oddly chest pumping, cock swaying contest with Muirfield but he, much like Cat, is doing it for someone else's benefit, which makes it hard to flat out condemn his actions either.

Even Joe's choice to bring in some trigger happy cops can't really be classed as truly evil as he is doing it for the sake of vengeance for his brother and doesn't know that his brother was actually criminal. Joe sadly is probably the only one who suffers due to the complexity since his character arc demands a lot more screen time than he is actually getting.

Much like last time Beauty and The Beast returns from the hiatus strong, it's visually very interesting, pleasing to us romance fans for the most part, introduces a great new character, adds new layers of threat, complexity and depth. Hopefully this time it will mean the show will get stronger and stronger, not stronger to a point then fizzle out and take a nosedive, time will tell. For now though, what a great episode.

Pros;
  • The opening dream sequence, was awesome.
  • Good monster effects.
  • JT.
  • Cat and Vincent have so much chemistry.
  • Actual threat has been added!
  • Great characters.
  • Added complexity and depth.
  • Vincent is badass.
Cons;
  • Despite strong chemistry, some of the lines Cat and Vincent get are extremely corny and it's almost embarrassing to watch.
  • There was still some relationship back-pedalling.
  • Please don't turn into Arrow, please don't turn into Arrow...PLEASE!
  • Muirfield are still shit.

Okay, my biggest problem with this episode--and it has been a problem for a while--is that we have yet another person that Vincent has known since coming back from war all hulked up. In the beginning they made us think that he had basically been hiding out in the warehouse for ten years hiding, but clearly he was out and about enough to meet some chick to(almost)bang. I mean, is the guy in hiding or not? They can't have it both ways.

Another problem for me, which actually ties into the first, is the idea that Cat actually thought that if they could get a witness to say the beast killed to save a life, that the people would get behind him and make the cops back off. SERIOUSLY??? As if the cops would say, "Oh, sure he killed a guy, but people like him, so whatever, he can go." Yes, he may have saved a life, but he also took one, and the law is the law. They can't just make up rules to suit the show--not when they are trying to sell these people as actual cops.

And as to the tie-in I mentioned, stupid as it was for them to believe that witness idea would work, if they really think all it would take is public opinion to save Vincent, why the hell doesn't he just take his story to the press? What the hell could Muirfield do? Even if they weren't already on the piddlin' side of pathetic, they still couldn't fight an entire city and stay a secret. Not to mention that Cat had boxes and boxes of shit on them left by her mother.

*sigh*

Even if Vince HAS been in hiding it isn't an easy thing to swallow considering Muirfield have so far provided zero threat. Sure now he's coming out of his shell more he is getting in more and more trouble but that isn't because of Muirfield it's because Vincent is an idiot.

Given how he's defeated Muirfield with ease when they've sent both mercenaries and agents after him I don't understand why Vincent doesn't just take the fight to them, he could easily kill them all and then get on with his life. Being that he is a former soldier I'm sure he wouldn't care about killing off some bad guys for a better future.

All of Cat's actions throughout the series have been incredibly stupid and implausible but become even more so when they're trying to convince us she is some kind of incredible detective.
