I apologise for how insanely late this is, after only just recovering from the last hangover, I leapt right into another night of heavy drinking and from that straight into a lecture. Let's just say that by the time I sat down to review this last night, I felt beyond shit. However, today I am refreshed and ready to watch another episode of what has been so far, a great series. I hope you enjoy!
As you may know, I have nothing against clichés, clichés are such for a reason but when they are used instead of imagination or emotion, then I have a problem, which is exactly the case of this weeks episode. It's the 'Daddy Issue' episode, there is no new spin, no twist and the writers and actors themselves seem to care so little about this story there is no heart either. It was flat, weak and ultimately pretty boring. It doesn't even really spend any time on any of it either, between the flashy battles and the fact the episodes are only about twenty minutes long, they had basically one scene with the issues and then by the next they were resolved again. So how am I even meant to force myself to care when it is over within a flash?
Super Sentai is difficult to go back to, I find, if you spend any time watching Kamen Rider. Although I'm no Kamen Rider buff, the few iterations I have seen treat each story like a mini-arc, giving several episodes to each story to allow it to play out properly which is why Kamen Rider is considered more of a drama. And I know these opening episodes are just there to introduce our characters but I really felt that a story like this demanded several episodes and if their intention was to give him an introduction story that was only about ten minutes long, then why didn't they pick something that actually fits? Blue's introduction worked just fine because they picked a story that worked in the time frame.
This week our villain is Debo Jailcell - his powers probably speak for themselves. Much like everything else, he seemed to barely do anything before he exploded. From what I could gather, he caged up humans and then used their anger at their situation to help fill the emotion meter thing to revive the Boss? I dunno, this show can be quite complicated and like a kid with ADHD, it never holds its attention to a singular subject for long, often before it really explains anything.
Even the action felt flat this week, big and flashy for sure but the action and energy didn't feel nearly as genuine as another explosion flashed on my screen and the episode raced to the next scene. I mean don't get me wrong, it's all still very fun, Dogold's appearance especially but the passion from last week elevated the action from fun to something truly enjoyable. Here it just felt oddly hollow.
This week they also get their motorbikes for this iteration, interestingly the bikes themselves are actually zords. Not seen that before, well from what I can remember. Also, with one more of the Kyoryu revealing their secret identity, means a new part to the zords.
I felt that something was...off with this episode. Although last weeks story was also clichéd there was a big heart, big enthusiasm that seemed to bleed from every frame, that was what made it all so enjoyable. This weeks however...something just felt like it was missing, although the action was just as huge and energetic, it all just felt flat and lifeless somehow. Still a lot of fun but I didn't end the episode with a shit eating grin like the last two weeks.
Pros;
- Even when it feels utterly empty, it's all still a lot of fun.
- Dogold seems cool.
- The Zord Bikes are cool
Cons;
- The story is over within a flash.
- The story itself is just unfleshed skeleton structuring.
- With the show moving so quickly, I'm quickly realising that I have no idea what is going on. What are the enemies motivations again, what are they actually doing and trying to achieve? Raise their boss by causing random chaos? I just want to make sure we're on the same page, the show itself doesn't really seem to have much interest in explaining it.
Think About It!
